The Artist’s Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity (25th Anniversary Ed.) (2021) by Julia Cameron

Originally published in 1992, Julia Cameron has devised a 12-week process to support creative recovery. Cameron believes that we are all artists, because creativity exemplifies the natural flow of God’s/Life Force energy running through us.

“In order to have self-expression, we must first have a self to express.” Through specific techniques and responding to different prompts, Cameron helps us to get us out of our heads and into our bodies; as well as helps us to quiet the noise of external influences to be able to attune the sound of our Self, our intuition, our truth, our values, and our pure and playful inner child. This is where creativity blossoms. And bringing it to fruition involves further cultivation as you pave the way by identifying and clearing blocks such as negative beliefs, engrained messaging, fears and insecurities, etc.

How was this book recommended to me? A client of mine was reading it AND my yoga teacher recommended it to me.

Would I recommend this to my colleagues? Sure, but for more specific reasons

Would I recommend this to my clients? Yes, and I have.

How do I apply this content to my work: Through different body-based approaches, one of my goals for helping my clients to heal is by helping them connect with/cultivate their core sense of Self. This book offers a slightly different approach with achieving a comparable goal. This book can be a great “homework” assignment to work on daily in-between sessions and we can process many of the blocks that might come up in the daily pages in sessions. I’ve found that this book applies to my own personal journey as well, noticing an increase in creativity being inspired as my own blocks are cleared as part of my own healing process.

If you live in WA state and feel like your struggles as a result of trauma and/or addiction have led to feeling disconnected from your core sense of self and your creative nature, contact me. Let’s schedule a free 15-minute consultation and see if we might be a good fit to work together.
